These Chessmen sets are all Handcrafted in India using the ‘Staunton’ design which is the most recognised style of chess piece in the world today. All Woods used are Hardwoods and are renewable and sustainable. Babul and Anjan have replaced the rarified Sheesham and Rosewood. All sets come in padded zipped black canvas pouches. We have categorised the Chess Sets according to King Height – from 63mm to 115mm. With each Chess Set we have recommended what we believe to be the best Chess Board match. The Chess Set Combinations below (Chessmen and Chess Board) are set out in Order of King Height – 63mm to 115mm. All Chessmen Sets come in padded zipped black canvas pouches and All Chess Boards are Deluxe Chess Boards unless the title states Standard Chess Board. These are just a small selection from a number of combinations that are available. With each Combination we have also suggested other Chess Board matches that are equally as pleasing. All our Chess Boards come from Barcelona, Spain. They are Beautifully Crafted and are Satin Finished or High Gloss Lacquered. Never polish the Boards due to their own Special Finish. Never leave the Boards exposed to Sunlight. We have categorised the Chess Boards in order of Square Size – 35mm Squares to 60mm Squares. Our Standard Chess Boards have a Standard Border ie a Narrow Border ranging from 15mm to 30mm as the size of the Chess Board increases. Our Deluxe Chess Boards have a Border equivalent to the size of the square eg a Deluxe Chess Board 35mm Squares will have a 35mm Border, a Deluxe Chess Board 40mm squares will have a 40mm Border and so on. All Chess Boards have a depth of 13mm unless otherwise stated. With each Chess Board we have suggested Chessmen sizes. An Isle of Lewis Chessmen Set is ideal for those interested in both the Historical Beginnings of Modern Day Chess as well as acquiring a most distinctive and majestic Chessmen Set that will undoubtedly achieve Heirloom status. These Ancient Norse Chess Pieces, dating back approximately 1150 AD, were discovered in 1831 on the Scottish Outer Hebrides Isle of Lewis. Aptly named Isle of Lewis Chessmen, they are one of the few surviving examples of Medieval Chessmen in the world. Of the 78 Chessmen found, 82 belong to the British Museum and the remaining 11 belong to the National Museums Scotland. We hold 3 versions of the Isle of Lewis Chessmen: From the National Museums of Scotland: These Lewis Chessmen are authentic replicas from the National Museums Scotland. Handmade in the UK from 3D Laser Scans, using a simulated ivory finish to accurately represent the walrus ivory originals. From Berkeley Chess, England: Berkeley’s skilled craftsmen have interpreted the iconic Isle of Lewis Chessmen to produce two slightly different versions to exemplify the majesty of these original sculptures, but both equally authentic of this magnificent chess set. These premium Theme Chessmen Sets from Berkeley Chess, England encapsulate the best of British craft manufacturing. Made from crushed marble stone and resin, these chess pieces undergo a special process. Stained in Russet (a contemporary brown) or Cardinal (a contemporary red), they are then further stained to add an aged antique effect. The Metallic Chessmen Sets are cast in metal and crushed marble stone resin and finished with a unique copper and steel/pewter metallic finish. They are approximately double the weight of the crushed stone sets. All Chess Pieces are well weighted and finished with a protective felt base. Each Chessmen Set comes individually housed in a Presentation Box. These Chessmen Sets are of the highest quality and add a new dimension to the time-honoured game of chess.
